Nazi dentist
So, I've had an on again off again tooth ache all week. I got into see my dentist this afternoon and she tells me that she has to extract the tooth and there was nothing else to be done with it because there was too much bone lost and that I was losing more bone every day. No trying to save it with a root canal, no way to put a partial plate in after wards and no chance of trying to make a bridge. Just pull it and leave a gaping hole.

I was so upset. I told her that my periodontist has been pleased with the progress of my bone loss in that area and that some of it was even regenerating in that area! She said she would call him and talk to him about it, but that I should plan on getting it extracted. I go out and make an appointment to get the tooth extracted (which I'm not going to let her do, even if it does need to come out) while she's calling my periodontist. She comes out a few minutes later and gives me the name of another periodontist and tells me to call her for a second opinion on my bone loss! Never called my other doctor!

I immediately drive home and called Dr. Forgosh and he was on the phone in two minutes. I explained the whole thing to him and he said he couldn't believe that even if the tooth couldn't be saved that there wasn't some sort of restorative measures that could be taken. He said, "come on down here right now and I'll take a look at it." He said he has no idea what this lady is talking about. He was looking at my films and didn't see why I couldn't get a root canal.

I can't believe if it was that bad, she didn't say something to me before this!!! The last time I was in she said I needed a filling.

I also can't believe that I'm fighting for a root canal.

grrrr.

Man it sucks when people are incompetent! Hope you get it all sorted out with a minimum amount of pain. Dentists suck. There is no such thing as a "good" dentist appointment. Even when there is nothing wrong they poke and prod and scrape. I hate going to the dentist!!

Me too! I'd rather have a gynecological exam than go to the dentist. Good luck Sharon, I hope you don't have to lose the tooth. But if you do, you might be able to develop a new talent, like spitting really far through the hole or something.

Re: Nazi dentist
I had a tooth that had that on again off again pain. One night I was eating some hot food and that tooth started throbbing. I had enough of pain and got in with my dentist the next morning. I told her I wanted it out and she talked me into a root canal which would need to be followed by a crown. I asked pricing for extraction, bridge, crown, root canal, etc. I decided to save my tooth, but I wanted the pain to stop. I got a root canal, only thing that hurt was the numbing, and later a crown. I don't regret it one bit, of course this is said long after the pain of the tooth and bills have subsided. I hope they can save your tooth.

Nice of the periodontist to take you right in, seems more concerned for your well-being.

Keep us posted.

I have no advice other than to say I am proud of you going to the dentist and actually fighting for a root canal

I myself needs to go to the dentist, but am a big baby and just wished I could get knocked out like when you get your wisdom teeth done-wake me up when it is all over

Re: Nazi dentist
Well, better news. At least Dr. Forgosh gave me an couple of alternatives. He said my bone structure was fine, it was the decay in my tooth, behind the filling that was already there that was the problem. And yes, it was tough to know whether or not a root canal would work. No one could know until they went in and removed the old filling and cleaned out the decay. He said even if there wasn't the perfect amount of root left, if the tooth was kept very clean after the root canal and the crown was put on, I could keep the tooth for another 10 years.

He said maybe more, if I sacrificed the outside tooth next to it (which he said was already a weak tooth and he'd rather try to save the inside tooth so I can still chew and sacrifice the outside tooth so I would be able to clean the inside tooth better.

He said I should ask my dentist if she would be willing to try this first before just taking the tooth out.

I said, "If you were in this position, and you know who you know in the dental world, who would you go to?"

I wasn't going back to the nazi dentist for this. NO way.

So he gave me the name of another dentist, who, he said, "if he can't do it, no one can." He is going to call him first thing tomorrow morning and explain the whole situation and that I need to be seen right away.

At the very worst. I lose both teeth and can be fitted for a partial denture, which the nazi said was impossible. My doctor laughed and said, "partial dentures have been around for decades and decades. It's not rocket science and it's entirely possible. Not perfect, but most definitely functional."

He also said, trying to be professional, that he didn't understand why my dentist presented all this in the way she did, but he was sorry that it was handle this way.

So, hopefully I'll have some positive news with this new guy. I do know though, that it's the end of Nazi dentist. Even if I do need the extraction(s), she won't be doing it.

Going in to see the new dentist at 1:30 this afternoon. His office already told me he will be performing a pulpotomy, which means he will remove the infection in the cavity and seal it with a new medicated temporary filling until he can decide whether or not he can do a root canal. In the meantime, this will take away my pain.

Back from the dentist. He said he can save the tooth!

He said it won't last the rest of my life, but I might get another ten years out of it. Well worth the time and money.

Now I just need to get over the throbbing headache and jaw pain from the procedure. He was much gentler than Nazi woman though.

Root canal has been scheduled for this Friday. They said they could take me tomorrow, but I think that was far too soon. At least this way I'll have the weekend to recuperate.

Well, I'm still alive. And the dentist still has both his hands. I made it through the root canal. It actually wasn't too bad at all. The only pain was the Novocaine to the roof of my mouth. That was NOT fun. But, not a bit of pain after that. Except the Novocaine is wearing off and it's throbbing a bit.

My doctor was very, very nice and was a bit of a comedian. He said, "The good news is you have very good roots! They are long and strong. I bet a lot of ladies can't say they've been complimented on their roots!"

hahahaha

The bad news is I have a barely discernible crack in what is left of my tooth. However, it hasn't reached the root yet and once I get the crown on, it probably won't fracture any further. But there is a 1% chance that it will get worse. If so, the tooth will have to be taken out.

I hope I'll be riding with the 99% crowd.

Back to the dentist today to get my outside tooth extracted so the one that just had the root canal will stay cleaner and hopefully last longer. I've had about enough of all these dentist visits. Then I get to look forward to the temp crown and then the permanent crown procedures. Uhg.

I also just realized that I completely forgot about Charlie getting his stitches removed Friday. Hopefully I can sneak that in sometime today as well.

Re: Nazi dentist
Well I have to say that was just horrible. Even with the happy gas I was crying through it all. My previous dentist and the one before that both said that tooth was just hanging by a thread, with no support and it was just going to fall out one day.

Not true. The damn tooth and roots were well entrenched in my gums and bone. So much so, this guy couldn't get one of my roots out. So I have a root just hanging out in my mouth with no tooth to take care of.

Man. I've really had enough of this baloney. In another two weeks I go in for the crown.

Yikes! That makes me hurt just reading about it! You poor thing. Is an exposed root not painful by itself? Holy crap. I hope you are done for a long while after the crown.

I was told the root will probably either just sit there and do nothing, or it will make it's way down, out through the gum and the dentist can then just grab it and pull it all the way out, virtually pain free.

I, for some reason, do not trust dentists and therefore believe this is BS. lol. We'll see.

I actually had one tooth on the other side of my mouth extracted by the oral surgeon who took out my wisdom teeth back in my twenties and that was uncomfortable, but not painful. He did it in one fell swoop and that tooth came out in a couple of minutes. I spent about an hour in the chair today. It seemed like four hours. It seemed like eternity. It was awful.

And I was trying to breathe in the laughing gas, but my nose was getting all plugged up because I was crying and then I was panicking because I couldn't breathe and it just got worse from there. They really ought to just knock me out for this crap.

Re: Nazi dentist
I hope this will be of some comfort to you. Getting a crown done on a tooth that has already had a root canal is easy. They just gave me a little numbing for my gums' sake.

I made me cringe thinking about your tooth extraction experience. Tell Mark you need some sympathy pampering tonight.
