Commuting Options - Want Opinions
2 different options for the upcoming commute - I'll present both and you all can help me decide which one is best.

1. Car to Train
Drive car to train station (20 mins, 10 miles). Park. Ride train for 23 mins. Walk 2 mins to work.

Total weekly cost (gas and train) - $30.

Total commute time - 1 hour.

2. Car Only
Drive car 17 miles each way and park in pre-paid parking spot/garage.

Total weekly cost (gas and parking) - $50.

Total commute time- Varies from 40 mins to 50 mins.

Votes?

I wouldn't want to be bothered with weirdos on a train, so I would drive all the way.

Used to crazies after living in Chicago for 5 years.

Oscar just informed me that my gas calculation is way off. He used to drive the car I am driving now. Apparently my weekly tally on car only would be closer to $65.

I think it depends on what's more important to you. $35 per week in savings adds up. But personally, I would rather have the ease of driving my car the whole way. It's a shorter commute (granted, not by much, but still) and you don't have to worry about train delays, being on time to catch the train (that would be an issue for me, LOL), etc.

I hate traveling by train. To many weirdo's that do not understand the meaning of personal hygiene. Besides that, I like the freedom the car gives me. Plus you can use the drive time to decompress. I vote car even if it is a little bit more money.

The train here in Charlotte is relatively new (3 years old I think). According to those who have ridden it, it is very clean and holds mostly business people during the weekday. Who knows though?!? Everyone's standards are different when it comes to public transportation.

I'm for the car too. I don't do public transport very well. I find it too constricting. I want to be able to go when I want to go...no muss, no fuss waiting for trains or running for trains.

Re: Commuting Options - Want Opinions
You left off two very important pieces of information.
1. What type of traffic will you be in if you drive the whole way?

2. What is the frequency of the trains during the day. Being it is a new line I would make sure there are frequent non-peak options. So if you need to leave mid day or whatever you can with relative ease.

I personally would take the train all the way. I hate sitting in traffic and dealing with idiots in rush hour. I would much rather read a book or listen to music and just ride.

Don't forget to take into account the increased wear and tear on your car and the costs.

Dawn! I need to call you!

1. Traffic, according to others, is completely dependent on the time you leave. Down to the minute...I have been told if I leave between 7-7:10am I am looking at 35 minutes in the morning. I wouldn't be able to leave until 4pm then and that puts me at about a 45 minute commute.

2. Trains run every 10 mins during rush hour and every 15 minutes the rest of the day.

And, a new development, I will be able to work from home some days a week after some time on the job.

Well there you go. I'd take my car the rest of the week.
