Dog bite
My neighbor has an Akita mix and he is extremely "quirky". He growls at everybody that comes to her house and has been like that as long as we have known them. (We have lived beside each other for 7 years.) Well, they had to go out of town this weekend and asked us to feed him then let him into the garage at night then put him in the yard for the day. Anyway, I fed Friday night then when I went to put him in the garage last night, he started growling. When I to take off his leash, he bit me on the forearm..we are talking my whole arm was in his mouth. I guess I am just dumb so I went over there this morning thinking he would be better. I had to put him on his leash to move him from the garage to the back yard. As soon as I got in the garage he really started growling and showing his teeth. He came over to me and bit me twice on the right hand between my thumb and index finger, broke the skin on both sides of my hand as well as teeth marks on the top and bottom of my hand. I got bit twice on the right hand and once on the left. It all happened so fast! I think I was more shocked than anything else.

My hand was extremely swollen (the one he bit twice). I went to Patient First and had my hand xrayed. Nothing was broken but they did clean out my wounds and now I am on antibiotic. We had to report the dog bite so I hope they don't get in too much trouble.

Anyway, that was my exciting Saturday. Needless to say, we aren't helping with him anymore. He was boarded once at a facility but he was asked not to come back.

Terri

Re: Dog bite

Terri,

I'm sorry you got hurt for trying to help someone out. I hope they step up to the plate and offer to help you with the medical bills. I've found that people don't because they are completely stupid, but I hope they do. You shouldn't have to pay for their incompetent training.

Re: Dog bite
Sorry you got bit. Especially since you were doing something nice for someone. They need to address this problem with him.
Feel better soon.

Re: Dog bite
Well that's pretty crappy... I hope your hands heal without complication. These folks have a serious problem with their dog!

Re: Dog bite
Ouch. How is the arm feeling today? Did you say anything to the dog's owners yet?

Re: Dog bite
Thanks for all the good wishes. I spoke to the owners today. They sincerely apologized for their dog's behaviour and offered to my my medical expenses.

Animal control called me today and they are investigating. In Virginia all dog bites have to be reported. I didn't want to cause any issues with them; being neighbors and all. They swear that he has never bitten or snapped before. I still find that hard to believe. The dog has to be quarantined at home for 10 days then they will return and check him out again. He was current with all shots and even had his city license.

The hand does feel better but is still sore. The swelling is starting to go down but still looks like a blown up rubber glove. I do have a nice lump on my arm from the tetanus shot. I can't remember those hurting so much.

Thanks again.

Terri

The first bite I might have forgiven. The second bite and Dick and Jane would have come home to find Spot missing.

Re: Dog bite
He is under a 10 day quarantine at home (doggie house arrest). After 10 days, Animal Control will come back and take another look at him.
