Can pitbulls be a good pet?
Hey everyone, My daughter and son-in-law witnessed a truck driver in our small town "dump" a pitbull just left him for good, well they felt the need to pick him up as he was on a highway where trucks go and felt he wouldve gotten ran over had they left him there, They have a 18 month old little boy, now I'm not too sure if this dog is full blood pit, but what is everyone's take on this, especially hearing I guess the myth that a pitbull will eventually turn especially around children, do yall believe that this dog can be a good dog especially if he is raised with love and not treated mean? Just kind of concerned about my grandson, now please everyone forgive my ignorance on this matter just really going by what I have heard, just really would appreciate everyones take on this matter. By the way this dog is not very old, looks still in the puppy stages.

Pitt bulls can be great pets, as any dog can be, it just depends on how you train them and what you teach them. My cousin has always had pitts and his two he has right now are canine good citizens and have all sorts of titles. They are the absolute sweetest dogs and I wouldn't have any issues letting Ben (17 months) be around them.

So while I'm not an expert - I think it's really based on how you raise/train them. I don't think they're all terrible dogs.

Yes, pit bulls can be good pets if trained and socialized well. I think they need strong, dog-experienced owners. My concern would not be simply that this dog is a pit, but more that they have no idea where he came from or how he's been raised thus far in his life. If his previous POS owner thought dumping him on the side of the road was OK, my guess is he hasn't had the best start in life. I'm not saying they shouldn't keep him, but I would be VERY careful with the dog around the baby. I would say that with a stray of any breed though.

My opinion has always been that you can't trust any dog 100%. They are dogs, you can't read their minds and you can't know what moves they may make. You can certainly train/raise a great family dog in any case. However, especially when it comes to kids, you have to be extremely aware of the dog's interactions at all times. Our chocolate, Dakota, has only ever bitten my son. She is the sweetest dog ever but when my son was young, he poked and prodded her one too many times. It's all in the owner's hands. Any dog has the potential for violence...they are dogs!

Thanks everyone for all of your responses, it puts my mind to ease. And that's true with any dog, even my labs if there eating I will not let my grandson go near them, because you never know, they've never given me the indication that they would turn, and as much as I love them, I still wouldn't trust them.

Yes, Pit Bulls can be good.

Jake my 6 year old Lab grew up with a Pit Bull Zach.
They are truly best friends.

Zach is a very gentle dog. I have and have no problem carrying Zach places.

I do agree it comes down to owners. Zach owners have done a wonderful job with Zach.

Training and Loving are the key.

You guys are absolutely 100 percent correct... it's the socialization and the training that makes a dog what it is. I taught my first grandson to RESPECT my Miss Emma from DAY 1..and Emma gives loads of love and respect in return.

Now two additional grandboys later, Emma is letting my 2 year old grandson roughhouse with her and occasionally/accidently pull her tail or ears or whatever and she simply licks my grandson and wants more love and attention.

The worst dog I know was a Sptiz and it bit me so badly they thought I would lose the sight in my eye. My mother was attacked by a mean Boston--and it went straight for her throat leaving huge gashes in her shins that she carried with her till the day my mom died

Training was and always will be the key with any pet.
